OCN Position Statement on COVID-19 Pandemic Issues – The Gaps in Hotel Quarantine

2021-02-26T15:30:57+11:00

February 2021 To date, the NSW Government has not acknowledged the risk of transmission of COVID-19 to residents in apartment buildings. The issues related to apartment buildings have gone under the radar as health authorities have had to focus on higher risk locations such as nursing homes, and on border control and the national Hotel Quarantine Program (HQP). The HQP has been Australia’s primary defense against the COVID-19 pandemic and has [...]

2021-02-16T12:30:11+11:00

Airbnb should be taken down while Ireland is in level 5 restrictions because it is “running amok” by facilitating blatant breaches, including parties and binge drinking in rural areas, a senator has claimed. Cork senator Tim Lombard called on the Government to introduce legislation aimed at restricting Airbnb from renting out properties across the country. He cited a recent example in Kinsale that saw seven people from seven households found in [...]

HomeBuilder might be the most-complex least-equitable construction jobs program ever devised

2020-09-07T14:45:49+10:00

5 JUNE 2020 HomeBuilder is a good idea gone bad. It is possibly the most complex and least equitable program the government could have devised to deliver construction jobs. It gives $25,000 to people who already own a home or already have enough money to buy one while delivering a minimal stimulus to extra construction. It isn’t a program to create jobs, it is a way of making people who are [...]

Debt crisis looms for renters and landlords

2020-09-21T21:53:37+10:00

24 MAY 2020 An increasing number of renters are at risk of accruing high levels of debt to landlords if the ACT Government fails to implement a repayment framework for rental arrears, according to a parliamentary committee inquiring into the ACT Government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The pause on evictions is in place until 27 July and there is no framework or government-provided structure for how accrued rental debts should [...]
