OCN SEMINAR: BUYING AN OLDER APARTMENT, 24 NOVEMBER 2012

The focus of this seminar was to inform prospective purchasers of the pros and cons of buying into an older building.  Expert speakers included a strata lawyer, building expert, strata manager, finance expert and the audience also heard from an OCN member who is an experienced executive committee member.

BIOGRAPHICAL DETAILS OF SPEAKERS
 
MC – JIMMY THOMSON
 
Jimmy Thomson is a journalist, author and scriptwriter who writes the popular weekly newspaper
column Flat Chat on apartment living in the Sydney Morning Herald and has written two books on the
subject. The website and problem-solving forum flat-chat.com.au based on his newspaper column now
frequently attracts more than 1000 unique visitors per day. Jimmy is also a regular guest on radio and
TV answering questions about apartment living and is a popular speaker at conferences and seminars on
the subject.
 
Jimmy is also a successful author on topics as diverse as Australian Tunnel Rats in Vietnam, cricketer
Shane Watson and Kings Cross Criminals as well as the creator of three TV drama series. He was born
in Scotland and has for the past 24 years lived in Sydney, almost entirely in strata, where he has been a
tenant, an owner-occupier and investor and in the past had been both a member and Chair of Executive
Committees
 
SUZIE BROOME
 
Suzie Broome leads the Strata and Community Title legal practice at Makinson and d’Apice with
Beverley Hoskinson-Green. She began her career as a senior Commonwealth public servant in
a number of departments and during that Federal employment Suzie was involved in significant
government enquiries making her well versed in navigating her way around bureaucracies at Local, State
and Federal levels.
 
After an appearance in the Industrial Relations Commission in early 1998 while representing an owners
corporation Suzie realised that strata law was in fact a complex, challenging and varied area of practice.
Suzie brings highly developed strategic thinking to strata and community scheme disputes particularly in
circumstances where local councils and government departments are involved.
 
Suzie holds post graduate qualifications in international and administrative law and advises on
complex strata law, building defects and community title matters for owners, owners corporations and
strata managers and runs all matters requiring advocacy in the CTTT, Local District and Supreme Courts.
 
LIZA PERERA
 
Liza Perera is a strata owner with a professional financial industry background speaking of her
experiences in apartment living.. She will speak today of what it means to be an owner, an occupier
or an investor from a financial perspective – and what this might mean to you when buying an older
apartment.
 
CHRIS MO’ANE
 
Group Managing Director of the Integrated Consultancy Group of Companies Chris Mo’ane has over
35 years of experience with the construction and strata sectors and has held positions on several
government corporation boards including the Construction industry training advisory board NSW. He
is proud of the fact that Integrated continues to maintain the highest levels of service delivery, is a
leader in the fields of engineering, building consultancy, contracts administration, along with other core
services to the strata, construction and government sectors and remains at the forefront in developing
new systems and procedures in the Strata Title area.
 
As well as the entrepreneurial spirit for which he is so well known and his commitment to Corporate
Governance Chris and the Integrated Consultancy Group of Companies have helped to design and
construct a 100 bed orphanage in Sri Lanka following the tsunami which devastated the Asia Pacific
region. They continue to assist with ongoing costs of the orphanage.
 
WALLY PATTERSON
 
Chairman and founding Managing Director of Dynamic Property Services Pty. Ltd, Wally is a highly
regarded industry leader. Recognised in 2003 with the ISTM President’s Award for his outstanding
contribution to the industry over many years, Wally is currently Chairman of the Strata and Community
Development Committee of the Urban Development Institute of Australia and a member of the NSW
government’s Strata Industry Working Group. He has held elected positions in both the NSW and
National professional associations including senior Vice President.
 
Wally was a founding member of the ISTM Benchmarking Trust Foundation, holds an Australian
Insurance Institute Diploma, Company Directors Diploma and has completed the ‘Essentials of
Community Association Management’ course in the United States. He has held a Strata Manager’s
licence since 1988 and a Real Estate Agent’s licence from 1968. Wally is a Foundation Fellow of the
Institute of Company Directors and an Associate Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management.
 
INGRID JACKSON
 
Ingrid has extensive private sector, public sector and international experience as a manager and
consultant in organisational communications, change management, organisation design, staff surveys,
focus groups, executive development and performance management.
 
Ingrid has provided consultancy services to a range of clients in financial services, government, utilities,
agribusiness and retail sectors. She also spent many years directing AusAid courses in human resources
management for managers from the Pacific, Southeast Asia, Asia, Africa and the Caribbean.
In addition to an MBA, Ingrid has a Graduate Diploma in Education and a Bachelor of Arts and is
accredited in the Myer Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), Elliott Jaques’ Levels of Work Complexity and
Richard Barrett’s Cultural Transformation Tools.
 
On retiring Ingrid has applied her skills and experience to owners corporations and, variously as
Chairperson or Secretary, is driving major remediation and transformation programs at several older
strata apartment buildings.
